Saturday Night Live - Elton John Monologue - Video - NBC.com
one of the most respected people in the gay community, Elton John is a man who has the power to set and change standards, especially where entertainment media is concerned.. Though society has come a long way in terms of accepting homosexuality, i wonder how this same monologue would be perceived had it come from someone else in the gay community, or even jokes of the same nature from a heterosexual person. The humor is presented as mostly observational and is not insulting in any way but had it come from a heterosexual comic there is a population of people who would be insulted. One thing that hasn't really been discussed in class is the fact that some people become too sensitive and don't understand that humor doesn't always convey hate and isn't always an attack on certain people. In fact, most humor involving topics of race or sexuality are mocking those who actually believe in superiority of straight whites over minorities or homosexuals. ...there, i said it.
Elton John was pretty funny there. I'll bet he and his partner are glad they don't live in RI.
